Wageningen School of Social Sciences (WASS) welcomes applications for their open
selection for PhD positions in the varied fields (see annex 1) covered by the
graduate school.

From January 2011 onward, a maximum of six scholarships will be available for
PhD research in the fields covered by WASS. The PhD positions are what is called
"free", which means no project description has been drawn up in advance, PhD
candidates are invited to submit their own proposals, and the best candidates
with the best proposals will be selected.

If you wish to apply for a PhD scholarship and participation in the PhD
programme of WASS, please submit the following before October 15th , 2010, to
wass@wur.nl (Wageningen School of Social Sciences, Wageningen, the Netherlands)

1. A letter in which you describe the motivation for your application for a PhD
research position, how the dissertation can be completed in the given period of
time and your present situation and employment;
2. The PhD Proposal using the form which accompanies this call
3. An indication of the costs for fieldwork, research, materials and travel
4. A Curriculum Vitae
5. A List of publications or, if you are a recent graduate, a list of papers you
have written
6. A Copy of your Master's degree examination grades
7. Results of TOEFL test (including the specific requirements for passing the
test).
8. Two letters of recommendation (one should be from outside Wageningen
University), using the form which accompanies this call

The application must be written in English
The deadline is very strict: the proposal has to be in at 9.00 AM on the 15th
October!

Assessment of applications
After submitting your application, you will receive a letter of confirmation
with further information about the selection process.
The applications will be subjected to:
1)A preliminary screening on completeness and compliance with the criteria by
WASS Office.
2)A first selection by an Assessment Committee.
3)The proposals and candidates selected in this first round will be reviewed by
two independent, anonymous reviewers and then discussed in a second selection by
an Assessment Committee. A telephone conversation with set questions can be part
of the procedure.
4)Candidates selected after the first and second screenings will be invited for
an interview and presentation of their proposal.
5)The final decisions will be made by the Director of WASS shortly after the
interviews and on the advice of the Assessment Committee.

Applications will be judged on the basis of the minimum admission requirements
for a PhD at Wageningen University, the grades of the master degree, the
reference letters, the proposal itself, the intended research, the reviews of
two independent peers and the result of the interview.

PhD candidates are to complete their project with a dissertation within a period
of four years.
The scholarships cover the PhD salary costs, including overhead costs according
to the integral cost funding of WU. The specific research cost, travel cost,
etc, should be covered by the supervising chair group on accepting the
allocation of the PhD.

The School provides three types of research grants:

1. Grants for esteemed visiting researchers
2. Grants for fellows, candidate fellows and post-docs of the school for
short

stays at universities and research institutes abroad
3. Grants for PhD candidates of the school for short stays at universities
and

research institutes abroad

1. Visiting researchers (continuous application)
The visiting researcher grant is meant for esteemed researchers with a PhD
degree, who will be hosted by a chair group of the School. The grant will cover
expenses up to 1500 € per month including travel costs. The grant will be
administered via the involved chair group. A visiting researcher may benefit
from a visiting researcher grant only once.

Conditions:
o Stay up to a maximum of 6 months
o Substantiated and clear added value to the research of the hosting group(s)
o Active contribution to the School and the WUR scientific community (e.g.
PhD

course, seminars, lecture, etc)
o Priority setting will be based upon:
Quality of the researcher (derived from CV and list of publications)
Proposed contribution to the activities of the School
Expected results in terms of establishing international networks or longer
lasting work relations

A short evaluation report (1/2 A4) describing concrete results will be sent to
the School after completion of the visit.

All fellows of the School may apply for these grants for visiting researchers by

sending the application form to the secretariat of the School including a CV and

a list of publications of the proposed visiting researcher.

2. Fellows, candidate fellows and post-docs of the School (continuous
application)

Fellows and post-docs of the school may apply for a grant to finance or
co-finance a short stay at a prestigious university or research institute
abroad. The grant will cover expenses up to 1500 € per month including travel
costs and will be administered via the chair group.

Conditions:
o Stay preferably between 1 and 6 months
o Substantiated and clear added value to the research of the chair group and
the

School
o Expected results in terms of establishing international networks or longer
lasting work relations
o No other or not sufficient financial resources available (e.g. NWO travel
and

accommodation grant, project funding, chair group funding, HRM sabbatical leave,

etc)
o A short evaluation report (1/2 A4) describing concrete results will be sent
to

the School after completion of the visit .

All fellows of the School may apply for these grants for visiting researchers by

sending the application form to the secretariat of the School.

3. Grants for PhD candidates of the School (call for proposals)

International experience is considered to be a vital ingredient for a successful

academic career. Junior Researcher Grants are meant for PhD candidates of the
School who would like to go abroad for a short stay at another prestigious
university or research institute outside the Netherlands. The stay might be in
the framework of participation in an international PhD course or a visit to a
research group with similar research interests. Field work or other research
work which forms an integral part of the PhD project is not eligible for
funding. The grant will cover expenses up to 900 € per month with a total
maximum of 3500 € (including travel costs) and will be administered via the
chair group of the PhD.

Conditions:
o Approved Training and Supervision Plan (TSP), an approved research project
proposal and a positive Go-decision
o Substantiated and clear added value to the research project of the
candidate
o Consent of the supervisor(s)
o The candidates who benefit from this programme are required to send a short

evaluation report (1/2 A4) describing the concrete results after completion of
the visit.

The School will open a call for proposals for grants for PhD candidates twice a
year in April and November (starting November 2010).
