Internship at the International Global Environmental Strategies, Japan.

IGES is recruiting research interns for the Summer 2011 period (as stipulated
in our Charter of Establishment) with the aim of promoting understanding of
its strategic research. IGES internships offer an opportunity to gain on-site
work experience, and are aimed at those who wish to play a part in
interdisciplinary
policy research toward sustainable development in the Asia Pacific region.

1. Research Groups currently recruiting interns:

Programme Management Office (PMO)
Adaptation Team (AD), Natural Resources Management Group (NRM)
Sustainable Consumption and Production Group (SCP)
[IGES Satellite Offices]
Kitakyushu Urban Centre（KUC）

2. Requirements:
Interns must:
Be postgraduates (location of graduate school does not matter).
Be willing to learn from the on-the-job training at IGES (the internship is
not a training programme for students to write an individual thesis, but
rather an opportunity to experience real strategic policy research and
operational activities).
Satisfy the individual criteria outlined in the "Internship Overview" for
the group with which you would like to spend your internship.
The research intern should be proficient enough in English for the purposes of
oral communication and writing of documents.

3. Content of training:
The research interns will collect information for, or draft documents related
to,
their own research group. Work is supervised by the director of or training
supervisor
for the group to which the intern belongs. Those who are selected for
internships will
be contacted by the relevant group director to discuss and agree on the specific
contents of training.

4. Term:
In principle, the internship should last a minimum of 2 months and a maximum of
3 months (and must fall between 1 April and 30 September 2011).
(actual term to be decided after discussion between the research intern and
their group)

6. Conditions:
(1)Working Hours: Five days per week in principle (9:30-18:00)
(2)Holidays: Saturday, Sunday and national holidays
(3)Accommodation:
a) IGES Hayama Headquarters
When the research intern cannot commute from his/her current residence to the
office,
he/she will be able to use the accommodation at IGES headquarters free of charge
if there are vacant rooms (telephone charges will be at the research intern's
own expense).
b) IGES Kitakyushu Urban Centre
If the research intern cannot commute from his/her current residence to the
office,
his/her will be able to use accommodation chosen by IGES. IGES will cover the
room rent,
although utility charges, telephone charges, and any extra charges for
additional services,
will be at the research intern's own expense.
(4)Travel expenses:
a) If the research intern commutes from his/her residence in Japan, IGES (in
accordance
with regulations) will cover the travel expenses necessary for the daily
commute.
b) Travel expenses will be covered for interns who are receiving training at the
Kitakyushu
Urban Centre and require accommodation chosen by IGES. IGES (in accordance with
regulations)
will cover expenses incurred by the intern's daily commute to work.
c) IGES does not cover expenses incurred for travel between the research
intern's home
and the accommodation they are using during their internship period.

7. Application:

9. Selection Process:
We will decide whether or not to accept candidates based on their applications
and
our email communication with them. There is a limit to the number of research
interns
who will be accepted. IGES will contact only the successful applicants in
February.
Please note in advance that we will not contact applicants who have not been
chosen
for an internship.

Visiting Fellowship - Call for Applications
The Governance of Clean Development Project (www.clean-development.com)

The Governance of Clean Development (GCD) Project is now inviting applications
for the second of its visiting fellowships, offering the opportunity for a
practitioner or academic to work alongside the GCD team at the University of
East Anglia (UK) on a topic relating to governance of clean development in the
area of energy.

What is included in the fellowship?The selected candidate will be based at the
University of East Anglia (UEA) for a period of a month or more during 2011 at a
time to be agreed. The candidate will work closely with the GCD team to produce
an agreed output on a theme relevant to the research programme on clean energy
development. This will include opportunities for meetings with key actors in
clean energy governance in London and at the Tyndall Centre, conference
participation and exchange of ideas with senior academics in the School of
International Development and other schools at UEA. The fellowship includes
international and UK travel costs, visa, insurance, accommodation in UK and a
small per diem. Salary replacement costs are not covered.

Expected outputs
The Visiting Fellow will be expected to engage with the GCD team and other
members of the department, present a seminar at the School of International
Development and prepare a paper for the GCD Working Paper Series

Who can apply?
The visiting fellowship scheme is open to academics and practitioners working on
topics relating to the governance of clean energy. Candidates from India,
Argentina and South Africa are particularly encouraged to apply, since these are
the countries where we are doing most of our field work, but we are open to
applications from candidates working in relevant areas from across Asia, Africa,
Latin America and the Caribbean.

How to apply?
To be considered for the Visiting Fellowship, candidates should submit the
following:
* Proposal (maximum 3 pages) detailing the work you would conduct during the
fellowship, how this is relevant to the themes of the GCD project and how the
fellowship would benefit you and your work.
* CV including the names and full contact details of two referees that can be
contacted in the event that your application is short-listed

* Short-listed candidates will be interviewed by telephone

The deadline for applications is 5pm on 7th February 2011. If you are in any

Themes of the GCD Project
We are keen to solicit proposals that relate to the following themes but are
open to suggestions from potential fellowship candidate about how their work
might fit with the research interests of the GCD Project:
* The governance of the CDM at the international level
* National and local level case studies of CDM governance or the governance of
clean energy beyond the remit of the CDM
* The role of international initiatives in the area of clean development and
clean energy (APP, REEEP, IRENA, PCF)
* The role of the World Bank in clean development
* The role of key regional actors (regional development banks, regional
institutions such as the EU, ASEAN, SADC)
* Sector specific cases of clean development and clean energy governance
* The role of business and civil society actors in the governance of clean
development
* The politics and governance of clean energy transitions (sectoral or
country-studies)
* Studies of the politics of tackling energy poverty and promoting clean
energy simultaneously
